How to Add Amazon Products to WordPress Without API Access (2026)

No API access

How to add Amazon products to WordPress before you have API access — without breaking the rules.

Most advice on this question tells you to install a plugin that scrapes Amazon. That is a material breach of the Operating Agreement and it is how affiliate accounts get closed. Here is what you are actually allowed to do, quoted from Amazon’s own policy, and how to reach the sales threshold that unlocks the rest.

Policy quoted 2026 rules Compliant box template Bootstrap plan

The short version

  • You can link, describe and recommend freely. Text links from SiteStripe work with no API access at all.
  • You cannot show Amazon’s product images. Amazon’s policy forbids storing or caching them, and SiteStripe stopped issuing image links at the end of 2023.
  • You cannot show a price. Prices must come from the API, and must carry a timestamp and disclaimer if you refresh less often than hourly.
  • Do not install a plugin that scrapes. “Data mining, robots, or similar data gathering and extraction tools” are prohibited in the licence terms. The plugin is not the one that loses the account — you are.
  • The gate has moved. PA-API 5 was retired in 2026. Its replacement, the Creators API, requires 10 qualifying sales in the trailing 30 days — which means access is now something you can lose, not just something you earn.

Every new Amazon affiliate hits the same wall. You have built the site, written the reviews, and you want product boxes that look like the ones on every site you have been reading. Then you apply for API access and Amazon tells you that you do not qualify yet.

Search for a way around it and you will find a dozen articles recommending plugins with a “no API mode”. Those plugins work by fetching Amazon’s product pages and reading the data out of them. That is scraping, it is explicitly prohibited, and the account it endangers is yours rather than the plugin author’s.

This page covers what you can legitimately do instead — which is more than most people think — and how to get through the gate quickly.

Why you do not have access, and what the threshold is in 2026

Two separate gates catch people, and they are often confused with each other.

Gate 1 — keeping your Associates account

After signing up you have 180 days to make 3 qualifying sales. Miss it and the account is closed, though you can reapply.

Gate 2 — getting API access

Amazon’s Creators API documentation requires at least 10 qualifying sales within the past 30 days. This is a rolling window, checked continuously.

The part that catches established publishers. Gate 2 is a rolling requirement, not a one-time unlock. If your sales dip below 10 in a 30-day window, API access can be withdrawn — and every product box on your site that depends on it stops updating. Publishers who had working credentials for years have hit this. If you see a AssociateNotEligible 403 error, that is what happened.

The threshold also moved recently. It was widely reported as a single qualifying sale in the trailing 30 days until late 2025, when it became 10. And in 2026 the old PA-API 5.0 was retired entirely and replaced by the Creators API, which is why a lot of the tutorials you will find no longer describe anything that exists.

What counts as a “qualifying sale” is genuinely ambiguous. Amazon has not defined it precisely, and support answers have contradicted each other. The community’s working interpretation is shipped items rather than orders — so one order containing five items counts as five. Plan for the stricter reading and you will not be caught out.

What Amazon’s policy actually says

Three sentences from the Associates Program policies decide everything on this page. They are worth reading in the original rather than in someone’s summary.

SubjectWhat the policy saysWhat it means for you
Images “You will not store or cache Product Advertising Content consisting of an image, but you may store a link to Product Advertising Content consisting of an image for up to 24 hours.” You cannot save Amazon product photos to your Media Library. Without API access you have no compliant way to show them at all.
Prices You may display pricing only where Amazon serves the link, or where you “obtain Product pricing and availability data via Creators API or PA API”. A date/time stamp is required if you refresh less often than hourly, plus the disclaimer that prices “are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change”. No API means no price. A hand-typed price is a violation the moment it goes stale — which is immediately.
Scraping The licence “does not include any downloading, copying or other use of Program Content for the benefit of any third party, or any use of data mining, robots, or similar data gathering and extraction tools.” Any plugin whose “no API mode” reads Amazon’s product pages is doing exactly this, in your name.

Quoted from the Amazon Associates Program Policies and the Operating Agreement, checked 25 August 2026. Amazon revises these without notice.

Why this matters more than it sounds. Amazon does not usually warn before it acts. The common outcome is not a takedown notice about one image — it is account closure with unpaid commissions forfeited, sometimes years into a site’s life. Building a business on a scraper is building it on a fault line. See what to do if your Associates account is closed for what recovery actually looks like, which is: difficult.

The compliant product box — what you can and cannot include

Here is the useful discovery. Strip out the two things you are not allowed to show, and what remains still converts — because the things you lose are the least persuasive parts of a product box anyway.

WHAT A NO-API PRODUCT BOX CAN CONTAIN YOUR OWN PHOTO YOUR VERDICT ✗ Price — needs the API, plus a timestamp ✗ Amazon’s product photo — cannot be cached Check price on Amazon → Allowed with no API access ✓ Your own photographs of the product ✓ Your own written description ✓ Specs you verified yourself ✓ Your rating, verdict and pros/cons ✓ A tagged SiteStripe text link ✓ A “check price on Amazon” button Not allowed ✗ Amazon’s product images ✗ Any price, current or typed ✗ Star ratings scraped from Amazon ✗ “Was $80, now $59” style claims
The “check price on Amazon” button is doing the work the price would have done — and it converts better, because it creates a reason to click.

Why omitting the price is not the loss it looks like. A price on the page gives a reader a reason to stop — they see the number, decide it is too much, and never click. A “check current price on Amazon” button gives them a reason to click, and clicking is the only thing that starts your 24-hour tracking window. Plenty of experienced affiliates leave prices off deliberately, long after they have API access.

Three ways to build it

1

SiteStripe text links

Works today · no API · free

SiteStripe is the toolbar Amazon shows across the top of its own site when you are logged into your Associates account. Its text link function still works and requires no API access whatsoever.

  • Log into Associates, then browse to the product on Amazon.
  • In the SiteStripe bar, choose Text, then copy the short link.
  • Paste it into your post. It already carries your tracking tag.

What no longer works: the Image and Text+Image options were removed at the end of 2023. If you have older posts built with SiteStripe image embeds, those images are already broken — worth checking, because a review page with a missing product photo looks abandoned.

2

Your own photographs and your own words

Best long-term option

This is the approach nobody recommends because it sounds like work, and it is the one that produces a site that outlasts every API change.

If you own the product, photograph it. A slightly imperfect photo of the actual item on your actual desk beats Amazon’s white-background render on every measure that matters: it is unique content, it proves first-hand experience, it is yours to keep, and Google’s helpful-content systems are increasingly good at telling the difference.

If you do not own the product, many manufacturers provide press images and explicitly permit their use — check the brand’s own media or press page. That is a licence from the manufacturer, entirely separate from Amazon’s rules.

This also solves a problem you will have later. Sites built entirely on API-fed content have nothing that belongs to them. When the API changes — and it changed twice in 2026 — their pages break. A page built on your own photographs and your own testing notes keeps working regardless.

3

A plugin — if you check what it does first

Convenient · verify before installing

A plugin can give you a properly designed, responsive product box with correct link tagging and a disclosure block, which saves real time. The question to ask before installing any of them is simple.

Ask the developer one question: “Where does the product data come from when I have no API credentials?”

If the answer is that it fetches Amazon’s product pages, reads the HTML, or uses “our own data source” without explaining it, that is scraping. Walk away. If the answer is that it renders only what you type in yourself, and shows no price and no Amazon imagery until you connect credentials, that is compliant.

A well-built plugin should also make the transition painless: the same product box you create manually today should start pulling live data the moment you add credentials, without you rebuilding a single post.

Getting to 10 sales — the actual bottleneck

Everything above is a holding pattern. The real goal is passing the gate, and the mistake most new affiliates make is spreading thin: forty posts on forty products, none of which rank, generating no sales at all.

Concentrate instead.

Pick low-competition, high-intent keywords

“Best budget standing desk under $300” converts. “Best standing desk” does not rank for a new site. Long, specific, purchase-ready.

Write about things you own

You need photographs and first-hand detail anyway. Start with what is already in your house — it is the only content you can produce that nobody can copy.

Aim at mid-priced items

You need units, not revenue, to pass the gate. Cheap accessories in the $20–60 range convert fastest and each shipped item counts.

Use your existing audience

An email list, a forum signature, a Facebook group you are genuinely part of. Ten sales is ten — this does not need to come from search traffic.

A timing detail worth knowing. Because the requirement is 10 sales in a rolling 30-day window, spreading ten sales across three months does not qualify you. You need them to land close together. If you are at six or seven, a short push — a seasonal post, an email to your list — is worth more than another month of steady trickle.

What changes when access arrives

Once you clear the threshold and generate credentials, live product data becomes available: current prices with the required timestamp, Amazon’s product images served correctly, availability, ratings, and the ability to build comparison tables that update themselves.

Two things to do immediately, because both are easy to forget:

  • Go back and upgrade your old posts. The manual boxes you built while waiting can become live ones. If your plugin cannot do this without you re-editing every post, that is a sign you chose the wrong plugin.
  • Set up monitoring for the rolling requirement. Access can be withdrawn as easily as it was granted. Watch your 30-day shipped-item count, and know that if boxes across your site suddenly go blank, AssociateNotEligible is the first thing to check.

It is also worth understanding what you will earn once sales start arriving — the rates are lower than most people expect, and they changed in 2026. See the current Amazon Associates commission rates.

Common questions

Can I use Amazon product images without API access?

No. Amazon’s policy states you “will not store or cache Product Advertising Content consisting of an image”, and permits storing only a link to such an image for up to 24 hours — which requires the API to obtain. SiteStripe stopped issuing image links at the end of 2023. Use your own photographs, or manufacturer press images where the brand permits it.

How many sales do I need for Amazon API access in 2026?

Amazon’s Creators API documentation requires at least 10 qualifying sales within the past 30 days. This is separate from the 3 sales within 180 days needed to keep your Associates account alive after signup. Note that the 10-sale requirement is rolling, so access can be lost as well as gained.

Is it against the rules to use a plugin that scrapes Amazon?

Yes. The licence explicitly excludes “any use of data mining, robots, or similar data gathering and extraction tools”. It makes no difference that a third party wrote the plugin — the Associates account carrying out the activity is yours, and it is your account that is at risk.

Can I just type the price in manually and update it occasionally?

No. Prices must be obtained through the API, and must carry a date/time stamp plus the disclaimer that prices “are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change” if refreshed less often than hourly. A hand-typed price meets neither condition, and a stale price is one of the most common triggers for enforcement.

What happened to PA-API 5.0?

It was retired in 2026 and replaced by the Amazon Creators API, a REST API offering SearchItems, GetItems, GetVariations and GetBrowseNodes. Any tutorial or plugin still describing PA-API 5.0 as current is out of date — worth checking before you buy anything.

Will a product box without a price still convert?

Often better. A price gives the reader a reason to decide against clicking before they ever reach Amazon. A “check current price” button gives them a reason to click, and the click is what starts your tracking window. Many affiliates omit prices deliberately even after gaining API access.

My product boxes went blank and I used to have API access. What happened?

Almost certainly the rolling 10-sale requirement. If your qualifying sales in the trailing 30 days dropped below the threshold, access is withdrawn and calls return an AssociateNotEligible 403 error. Check your shipped-item count for the last 30 days first — it is far more likely than a credential or code problem.

Can I use a different product data provider instead?

Some services resell Amazon catalogue data. Be careful: if the data originates from scraping, using it still places you in breach, and “we bought it from a vendor” is not a defence under the terms. If you use one, ask directly how the data is sourced and get the answer in writing.
