The best free WordPress theme for an Amazon affiliate site.
Six free themes compared on what WordPress.org actually publishes about them: use, ratings, update dates, PHP requirements and download size. Then the four checks that matter more than any of those.
The short version
- A free theme is enough. Product boxes and comparison tables come from your plugin and content, not the theme.
- GeneratePress has the smallest download at about 1 MB, but its last WordPress.org update was December 2025.
- Astra is the most used and was updated in late September 2026, with the largest download of the classic themes here.
- Test one real article before you commit. Your widest comparison table on a phone is the check that catches most problems.
Affiliate site owners tend to over-think the theme. It decides how your pages look and part of how fast they load. It does not decide whether a product box converts or whether a review ranks. What it can do is get in the way: squeeze a four-column table into an unreadable strip, load a page builder you never use, or stop being updated. This page compares six popular free themes on the published facts and gives you the checks that reveal those problems.
What this page does not claim. We have not lab-tested each theme’s speed, and nobody can honestly rank themes on speed without testing your own content. Every number below comes from WordPress.org on 1 October 2026.
Six free themes, by the published numbers
| Theme | Active installs | Rating | Last updated | Needs PHP | Download |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Astra | 1M+ | 98% (6,532) | 24 Sep 2026 | 5.3+ | 6.70 MB |
| GeneratePress | 500K+ | 98% (1,427) | 1 Dec 2025 | 7.4+ | 1.06 MB |
| Kadence | 500K+ | 98% (455) | 24 Jul 2026 | 7.4+ | 2.07 MB |
| Blocksy | 300K+ | 100% (873) | 11 Sep 2026 | 7.0+ | 3.76 MB |
| Neve | 200K+ | 94% (1,283) | 29 Sep 2026 | 7.0+ | 3.79 MB |
| Twenty Twenty-Five | 1M+ | 78% (13) | 20 May 2026 | 7.2+ | 8.19 MB |
Rating is WordPress.org’s score with the number of ratings in brackets. Twenty Twenty-Five’s 78% rests on only 13 ratings, so read it with care. Active installs are WordPress.org’s rounded bands.
The four checks that matter more than the numbers
- Tables first. Affiliate pages lean on comparison tables. A theme with a narrow content column turns a four-column table into a horizontal scroll on every phone. Our guide to comparison tables that convert covers what to put in them.
- Measure with your heaviest element in place. Product boxes usually cost more speed than the theme does; see why product boxes wreck Core Web Vitals before blaming the theme.
- Check PHP against your plugins too. Some affiliate plugins now need newer PHP than any theme here; AAWP’s 5.1.0 release, for example, requires PHP 8.1.
- Read the update date. Every theme here except GeneratePress was updated on WordPress.org in 2026. That is not proof of a problem, but it is worth a look at the support forum before you build on it.
Which one to pick, by situation
| If you want… | Start with |
|---|---|
| The smallest package | GeneratePress, after checking its forum for recent activity |
| The most widely used, updated often | Astra |
| To build mainly with blocks and patterns | Kadence or Blocksy |
| Nothing extra installed at all | Twenty Twenty-Five, which ships with WordPress |
Whatever you choose, the structure of the site matters more than its skin; how to structure an Amazon affiliate site covers the part that decides rankings. And if you are still adding up costs, what it costs to start an affiliate site shows where a free theme leaves room in the budget.

Works with any of these themes
Ama Affiliate Pro adds product boxes, comparison tables and disclosures through shortcodes that render in any of these themes, so switching theme later does not mean rebuilding your articles.

What is the best free WordPress theme for an Amazon affiliate site?
There is no single winner. For the smallest download, GeneratePress; for the most frequent updates and widest use, Astra; for a block-editor-first build, Kadence or Blocksy. All are free on WordPress.org. Choose on the four checks on this page, then test one real article.
Do I need a paid theme for an affiliate site?
No. Product boxes, comparison tables and disclosures come from your affiliate plugin and your content, not the theme. A free theme that loads quickly and gives tables enough width does the job.
Does the theme affect Core Web Vitals?
Yes, but product boxes, images and ad scripts usually matter more. Test the same article with PageSpeed Insights before and after a theme switch rather than trusting any theme’s marketing.
Is a smaller theme download faster?
Not necessarily. Download size counts every file in the package, including ones never sent to visitors. It is a rough hint at how much code ships, not a measure of page weight.
Should I use a block theme like Twenty Twenty-Five?
You can. It ships with WordPress and needs nothing else. It has far fewer ratings on WordPress.org than the others, and fewer layout options for things like wide comparison tables, so test a real article first.
How often should a theme be updated?
There is no fixed rule, but a theme that has gone many months without an update deserves a look at its support forum before you build on it. WordPress.org shows the last update date on every theme page.
